BuildingsScore ("we", "us") is a free web tool that rates a location by its surroundings. This page explains what data the site handles, the cookies and advertising it uses, and your rights. By using BuildingsScore you agree to this policy.

Who is responsible

The operator of BuildingsScore is the data controller for the limited processing described below. For any privacy request, contact us at: [add your contact email here].

What we collect

• The location you choose. When you click the map or search an address, the coordinates (and, for searches, the address text) are sent to our backend so it can fetch and score what's nearby. Results are cached on a coarse (~11 m) grid to serve future visitors faster.
• Approximate IP address. Our backend briefly uses your IP address to rate-limit requests (abuse / cost protection). It is not used to identify you or build a profile, and is not sold.
• A language preference stored in your browser's local storage so the site remembers your chosen language. This stays on your device.
• No accounts. There is no sign-up or login. We do not ask for your name, email, or payment details.

Cookies & local storage

BuildingsScore itself does not set tracking cookies — it only uses local storage for your language choice. However, our advertising and map partners (below) may set cookies in your browser. You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings; some features may then not work as well.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

This site displays ads served by Google AdSense and its partners. Accordingly:

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
• Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
• You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized ads at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.

If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland, we will ask for your consent before personalized ads and non-essential cookies are used, via a consent banner. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time.

Third-party services we rely on

To work, BuildingsScore sends the location you select to these providers, who process it under their own privacy policies:

• Google Maps Platform — base map, places, and air quality (privacy policy).
• Supabase — backend hosting, edge functions, and the results cache (privacy policy).
• OpenStreetMap / Overpass and keyless routers (OSRM, Valhalla) — map features and walking routes.
• Nominatim — turning coordinates into an address.
• European Environment Agency and Open-Meteo — aircraft noise and elevation data.

How long we keep data

Cached surroundings results are retained for about 60 days, then refreshed. Rate-limit records based on IP address are short-lived and used only to throttle abuse.

International transfers

Some providers above (e.g. Google, Supabase) may process data on servers outside your country, including outside the European Economic Area, under appropriate safeguards such as the providers' standard contractual clauses.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (e.g. under the EU/UK GDPR), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to it or lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. Because we do not hold accounts and only process the limited data above, the practical scope is small — contact us at the email above to exercise these rights.

Children

BuildingsScore is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We may update this policy; the "last updated" date above will change. Significant changes will be reflected here.
